STARLUX Airlines is set to revolutionise its onboard experience through an expanded partnership with Viasat, enhancing in-flight connectivity (IFC) across its entire fleet. The initiative will see 48 aircraft, including Airbus A321neos, A330-900s, A350-900s, and A350-1000s, equipped with Viasat’s advanced GM-40 terminal, a system designed for ViaSat-3 compatibility and multi-orbit connectivity.

The rollout will take place in phases, featuring factory installations on new aircraft and expedited retrofits for existing ones. This underscores STARLUX’s commitment to providing passengers with seamless, high-speed Wi-Fi, enabling them to stream content, browse the internet, and stay connected throughout their journey.

Raising the Bar for Connectivity in Asia-Pacific

As one of the first airlines in Asia-Pacific to adopt Viasat’s next-generation Ka-band satellite technology, STARLUX is setting new standards for in-flight connectivity. Viasat’s high-capacity satellite network, soon to include the ViaSat-3 constellation, will offer passengers a more consistent and faster online experience across key Asian and transpacific routes.

According to Don Buchman, Senior Vice President and GM, Commercial Aviation at Viasat:

“Viasat is proud to partner with STARLUX, an airline that shares our passion for innovation and customer satisfaction. Through this expanded relationship, we look forward to not only providing high-quality connectivity but also a comprehensive solution that empowers STARLUX to deliver an advanced, refined, and connected experience aligned with its ambitions.”

Transitioning from Legacy Systems to a Future-Ready Network

Previously, STARLUX’s connectivity was powered by Inmarsat’s Global Xpress (GX) network, managed by SITAONAIR. However, following Viasat’s acquisition of Inmarsat, STARLUX is making the shift to Viasat’s proprietary network, ensuring a more streamlined and scalable service. The GM-40 terminal will initially leverage Viasat’s owned and partner satellites, including GX6A for East Asian routes and ViaSat-3 F1 for transpacific flights, with additional capacity from third-party satellites to follow.

A Growing Airline Trend: More Carriers Opt for Viasat

STARLUX joins a growing list of airlines upgrading to Viasat’s cutting-edge IFC solutions in 2024 and 2025. Recently, Lufthansa Group announced plans to equip over 150 aircraft across Lufthansa, SWISS, and Austrian Airlines with Viasat’s European Aviation Network (EAN). Similarly, LOT Polish Airlines selected Viasat to provide in-flight Wi-Fi for its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet, a major step in improving connectivity for transatlantic and European routes.

Additionally, Korean Air expanded its Viasat partnership to cover 40 more aircraft, and Icelandair opted for Viasat’s solution for its new Airbus fleet, both strengthening in-flight connectivity offerings across their respective markets.

A Refined Passenger Experience with Complimentary Wi-Fi

STARLUX’s “Galactic Wi-Fi” service already offers complimentary and unlimited Wi-Fi to first, business, and premium economy passengers, while economy travellers can enjoy free messaging services on platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Although the airline has temporarily suspended its paid Wi-Fi plans due to ongoing system upgrades, STARLUX reassures passengers that equipment enhancements will continue to improve network performance and stability.

A Bold Step Towards the Future of Air Travel

STARLUX’s transition to Viasat’s cutting-edge IFC system marks a major advancement in in-flight connectivity, reinforcing its position as a premium airline. As more carriers invest in high-speed, satellite-based connectivity, STARLUX’s adoption of a future-ready, multi-orbit solution places it ahead of the curve in Asia-Pacific aviation.

With Viasat’s next-generation satellites coming online and an ongoing focus on digital enhancements, STARLUX passengers can anticipate a more connected and effortless travel experience, whether flying across Asia or on long-haul transpacific routes.
