British Airways is quietly publicising the fact that you can now do an overnight bag drop at a few select airports the day before you fly.

While launched in February 2020, HeadforPoints cites that it was quietly offered to passengers offered since last Autumn 2019 to anyone who turned up and asked.  British Airways has now decided to make it an official part of its service.

Where can i drop my bags off

The British Airways Overnight Bag Drop service is currently offered at 3 airports in the UK:

  • Heathrow Terminal 5 – check-in between 16.00 and 22.00 for flights departing before 13.00 the next day
  • Heathrow Terminal 3 – service not available
  • Gatwick South – check-in between 16.00 and 22.00 for flights departing before 13.00 the next day
  • Edinburgh – check-in between 04.00 and 20.00 (18.00 on Saturdays) for flights departing before 09.30 the next day

Just be aware though, for security reasons, you cannot check-in someone else in their absence using the British Airways Overnight Bag Drop service. Everyone in your booking needs to be present. British Airways ask you to provide a contact number, give you your boarding pass and take any baggage you want to check-in. Once your baggage has been checked in, you will not be able to retrieve it so make sure you have everything you need before you check-in.

What happens if you want to check in earlier (but not the day before)?

Heathrow, likely due to its size and capacity, can take your bags earlier on the same day if you are travelling in a premium cabin or have elite status with the airline (not available for status on other Oneworld member airlines)
