Frontier Airlines is making waves in the ultra-low-cost carrier market with a bold transformation aimed at redefining affordability and premium travel. Under its newly announced initiative, The New Frontier, the Denver-based airline is rolling out first-class seating, elite status upgrades, and free companion travel in an aggressive bid to differentiate itself in an increasingly competitive industry.

Frontier Airlines Introduces First-Class Seating

In a move that challenges traditional low-cost airline models, Frontier plans to introduce a dedicated first-class cabin across its fleet by late 2025. The new premium seating will feature eight seats in a 2-2 configuration, offering passengers a more comfortable alternative to standard economy. This shift follows the airline’s 2024 introduction of UpFront Plus seating, which provided extra legroom and a blocked middle seat.

Barry Biffle, CEO of Frontier Airlines, emphasized that these changes are a direct response to customer demand:

“Travelers should expect more from their airline and, in 2025, Frontier will deliver as we continue our transformation into the most rewarding airline in the sky. We’ve listened to customers, and they want more – more premium options, like first class seating, attainable seat upgrades, more free travel for their companions, and the ability to use miles on more than just airfare.”

The introduction of first-class seating signals a major shift for Frontier, traditionally known for its no-frills, budget-friendly approach. This change puts it in direct competition with JetBlue, which has yet to announce its own first-class product despite operating in premium-heavy markets like New York and Boston.

Free Seat Upgrades for Elite Members

One of the most exciting changes in The New Frontier initiative is the launch of free seat upgrades for elite members of the Frontier Miles loyalty program. Gold, Platinum, and Diamond members will now enjoy complimentary access to UpFront Plus seats, with upgrades to first-class becoming available upon its introduction.

Upgrade eligibility is structured as follows:

  • Diamond Members: Upgrades available 24 hours before departure
  • Platinum Members: Upgrades available 12 hours before departure
  • Gold Members: Upgrades available 4 hours before departure

Seat upgrades can be selected via the airline’s mobile app or website, making the process seamless for frequent flyers.

Bobby Schroeter, Frontier’s Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted the significance of this move:

“Frontier’s most loyal customers will have even more reason to make us their airline of choice this year as they start enjoying free seat upgrades and other enhancements, adding extra comfort and convenience to their travel.”

Unlimited Free Companion Travel for Elite Flyers

Further reinforcing its commitment to loyalty, Frontier will roll out unlimited free companion travel in mid-2025. Platinum and Diamond elite members can bring a companion on any flight at no extra cost, aside from applicable taxes and fees. This benefit applies to all flights and is expected to appeal to frequent travellers who prioritize flexibility and value.

Innovative Travel Programs: GoWild! Flight Pass & Kids Fly Free

Frontier had previously pushed the boundaries of affordability with its GoWild! All-You-Can-Fly Pass and Kids Fly Free programs.

  • GoWild! Flight Pass: Introduced in 2023, this subscription-based model allowed passengers to fly unlimited times to any of Frontier’s destinations for a flat fee. This initiative follows similar models seen in other airlines like Alaska Airlines’ Flight Pass but stands out by offering a more flexible, budget-friendly option for spontaneous travellers.
  • Kids Fly Free: Aimed at family travellers, this program allowed children aged 14 and under to fly for free when accompanied by a paying adult, provided they were part of Frontier’s Discount Den membership. While some legacy airlines offer discounted child fares, Frontier is one of the few North American carriers to provide fully free airfare for children under this scheme.

These programs not only drove passenger volume but also cemented Frontier’s position as an innovator in the ULCC space.

Industry Implications and Competitive Positioning

Frontier’s shift toward a more premium product reflects broader industry trends where ultra-low-cost carriers are struggling to sustain profitability under traditional models. As major airlines like American, Delta, and United dominate with extensive route networks and diversified revenue streams, low-cost carriers have been forced to rethink their strategies.

By adding first-class seating and enhancing its loyalty program, Frontier is attempting to carve out a new niche—offering premium features at budget-friendly prices.
