Starting January 1, 2025, Air India has officially launched in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity on both domestic and international flights, becoming the first airline in India to introduce this service. The Tata Group-owned full-service carrier has implemented this feature on its widebody Airbus A350, Boeing 787-9, and select Airbus A321neo aircraft, positioning itself as a digital pioneer in the Indian aviation market.
The service allows passengers to browse the internet, engage on social media, work, and stay connected with family and friends using Wi-Fi-enabled devices such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones operating on both iOS and Android systems. Supporting multiple device connections simultaneously above 10,000 feet, this service aligns with modern travel expectations where connectivity plays a key role.
Free Wi-Fi for an Introductory Period
To promote adoption, Air India is offering complimentary Wi-Fi access during the introductory phase. Passengers can connect by selecting the “Air India Wi-Fi” network, entering their PNR and last name through the airline’s portal. The airline had initially tested the service on international routes, including flights to New York, London, Paris, and Singapore, before expanding to domestic operations. A phased rollout across the entire fleet is expected in the coming months.
Enhancing Passenger Experience
Rajesh Dogra, Chief Customer Experience Officer, highlighted how this launch addresses evolving passenger expectations. Real-time connectivity enhances both leisure and business travel, supporting productivity and engagement during flights. The decision to offer multiple device support further ensures a seamless digital experience onboard.
Industry Insights and Broader Trends
Globally, airlines like Emirates, Singapore Airlines, and Lufthansa have long provided in-flight Wi-Fi, positioning connectivity as a core service. Air India’s introduction of this service on domestic flights sets a new benchmark for the Indian market, reflecting the trend where in-flight internet access is evolving from a premium feature to a standard amenity.
Challenges remain, as the service relies on satellite connectivity, bandwidth limitations, and regulatory approvals, factors that can influence speed and reliability. However, Air India’s decision to offer Wi-Fi on both domestic and international routes signifies a strategic move towards aligning with global standards.
Strategic Expansion
Air India plans to expand Wi-Fi connectivity across its entire fleet progressively. This initiative not only enhances the airline’s competitive positioning but also reflects its long-term commitment to digital transformation under Tata Group ownership.
By being the first to offer in-flight Wi-Fi on domestic routes, Air India is setting a significant precedent, emphasizing passenger convenience, modern digital trends, and a commitment to maintaining leadership in the evolving Indian aviation sector.
